What Collagen Does and Which Collagen is Best

Posted by Lori Ballen on

I wish I had learned about collagen when I was younger. It's an abundant protein with amino acids that our body needs. Collagen production declines with age.

As we age, our body slows production of collagen. By age 40, we use it more than we can produce it. And around 20 years beyond that, we have depleted it by half.

It's vital for aging or athletic individuals to use collagen.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • As we age, our collagen is depleted
  • Collagen is good for skin, hair, nails, tissue, liver function, fat burning, muscle
  • Collagen comes from Animal Protein
  • Collagen comes from whole foods and can be supplemented  in many forms including capsules, powders, broth, and gelatin
  • Collagen can be added to recipes and beverages
  • Collagen supplements are availabe in flavored and unflavored.
  • 10-30 grams per day is a commonly advised dose.
  • Read the ingredients. Some Collagen powders and supplements have added sugars and preservatives.
  • Collagen from Grass-Fed animals is a favorable choice

Collagen is a popular word thrown around for those living a ketogenic lifestyle. Of course, the "Keto Diet" is great for weight loss, and many live the lifestyle for health benefits as well as it's anti-aging properties.

When not absorbing enough quality protein, the body may, in fact, pull from its own sources starting with collagen. It's essential to digest the proper amount of protein the body needs and supplement where there isn't enough.

Collagen is what our body uses for healthy skin, hair, tissue, nails, bones and so forth. As we age, collagen is depleted.

Lack of collagen causes:

  • Wrinkles
  • Sore Muscles
  • Thinning Hair
  • Brittle Nails
  • Joint Pain
  • Skin Sagging
  • Poor Liver Functions
  • Gut Issues

How Does Collagen Taste?

Unflavored Collagen doesn't really have a flavor. It can easily be added to recipes or liquids without changing the flavor.

Some prefer flavored collagen which is available in a variety of flavors.

How Collagen Supplements Are Made

I hesitate to tell you how collagen supplements are made as many can't get past what it is. Collagen supplements are made by cooking a whole animal to collect the collagen from the connective tissue, skin, and bones.

How Long For Results?

While results will vary from person to person, depending on the use of the supplement, and quantities, many see the following results within a few months:

  • Improved joint mobility
  • Less joint pain
  • Better Hair Texture
  • Improved Skin
  • Stronger Nails

Collagen Vs. Gelatin

While essentially the same values, there is a difference in the way these can be used in the kitchen.

  • Collagen can be used in preparing hot or cold foods and liquids.
  • Gelatin is to be used in a hot liquid where it will dissolve.

How Much Collagen?

You'll find Collagen in serving sizes of 2 to 20 grams in an average serving. Some take collagen throughout the day taking as much as 50 grams or more. There are some Keto experts that will advise against large doses of any kind of protein as there is a risk of being kicked out Ketosis. 10 to 30 grams in one day is often a recommended amount.

That being said, I personally test my ketones with a blood meter and have not found this to be the case.

If you enjoy Keto science, you may enjoy this talk by Dr. Benjamin Bikman. It's another fun debate had often inside the Keto community. Does eating too much protein actually knock you out of ketosis and does it matter?

Read The Ingredients

Some gelatin and collagen powders and pills have added flavors, sugars, and preservatives. Those living a ketogenic lifestyle prefer the cleanest, most unprocessed ingredients available.
